On May 13, 2014 the SoCal Chapter joined with the OC CSI Chapter in hosting our first Joint Dinner Technical meeting and networking reception at The Phoenix Club in Anaheim. The evening’s subject was “Design Considerations for Air Barriers.”

The event was gracious sponsored though table-tops from the Architectural Accent, Brava Tile, Insulfoam, Siplast, Sto Corp, and W.R. Meadows.

Before the presentation, CSI Chapter President David Brown welcomed the crowd of over 80 attendees, with an even mix of CSI and RCI members. David led the gathering in a “Pledge of Allegiance” and a round of self-introductions of all attendees, a CSI tradition. Next, SoCal Chapter of RCI President Danny Westerfield of D7 Consulting introduced the quest speaker for the evening Laverne Dalgliesh, Principal of Building Professionals, Inc.

Mr. Dalgliesh, is also the Executive Director of the Air Barrier Association of America (ABAA), in which he works to champion energy conservation in buildings while educating building owners and designers about the energy conservation benefits such as durability, comfort, reduced maintenance, reduced HVAC equipment and operational costs, and positive impact on the environment. Mr. Dalglieshes presentation identified general design considerations when incorporating an Air Barrier system into a building’s design and the importance of continuity of the system in basic details for effectiveness. He also outlined a general understanding of the air pressures on a building and how they relate to the different types of air leaks that can occur in the enclosure system.

This Joint Dinner Technical meeting received great reception from both association’s attendees and the Chapter Presidents have pledged to continue this format of a shared meeting at a minimum on an Annual basis.

A special thank you goes out to Szymon Zienkiewicz of SGH, our Education Committee Chairman and Moira Howmann of Sunshine Supply Company for her tireless volunteering efforts in coordinating the joint meeting and assisting with registrations.

March 2013
28th RCI International Convention and Trade Show

Szymon Zienkiewicz and Dean Larsen of the Chapter board attended the 28th RCI National Convention and Tradeshow in the Rosen Shingle Creek Resort in Orlando, Florida which commemorated the 30th anniversary of RCI.  The annual event, which lasted from 14 March to 19 March attracted a record attendance of over 1,400, over half of the 2,700 registered members of RCI.  Under the banner of "Celebrating the Past - Focusing on the Future" the event offered educational seminars, tradeshow exhibitions with live product demonstrations, committee meetings, a golf tournament and RCI examinations.

Carl Hiaasen, an award-winning, local author and reporter entertained during the keynote address with his satirical perspective on the daily events that transpire in south Florida.  News headlines that he referenced definitely gave the "Headlines" segment on Jay Leno a run for its money.  Mr. Hiaasen may be remembered here in Southern California for the feature film Striptease, starring Demi Moore and Burt Reynolds which was based on one of his novels.

During the convention our Chapter donated $2,000 to the RCI Foundation (RCIF) in support of their mission to foster research, advance education, and disseminate information on issues important to the building envelope industry.

For a copy of the letter from RCIF to the Chapter visit: here

For additional information and a write-up about the convention please visit: here

Next year’s convention will be local to our Chapter at the Anaheim Hilton and Anaheim Convention Center from March 20-25, 2014.  For more information please visit: here

ABOUT US

RCI, Incorporated
is an international association of professional consultants, architects, and engineers who specialize in the specification and design of roofing, waterproofing and building envelope systems.

Since 1983 RCI members have offered unbiased design, repair planning, quality observance, legal testimony, and general roof management services.  In March of 2006, RCI (formerly Roof Consultants Institute) expanded its mission and service scope to include waterproofing and the building envelope.  This action reflects the understanding that roofing issues often influence the entire building envelope.  It was discovered that in increasing frequency, RCI Members are called upon to address building-wide concerns from below-grade to rooftop.

The Southern California (SoCal) Chapter formed in 2003 with the purpose to provide a medium at the local level for the advancement of the objectives of RCI - to promote closer relations and cooperation amount the professionals, contractors, manufacturers, trade associations and societies which are engaged in, or directly connected with, the building construction industry.
