Welcome Back from the Summer
Hopefully you had a restful yet productive summer and we would like to welcome you back for the fall quarter which promises to be a busy one.
On the education front we have two upcoming programs, the PMMA Waterproofing Dinner Meeting in September and the Concrete Preparation for Waterproofing, Coating and Flooring Installations Seminar in October. Also most likely we will have another dinner meeting in November and an Annual Members Meeting in early December.
As well, look out for news on our 2014 Hawaii Winter Workshop coming up shortly, with an agenda and online registration.
Additionally we are finalizing with RCI, Inc. to host regionally two of their standard programs in the first half of next year. One of the programs will be the preparation for and the Registered Roof Observer (RRO) examination.
The major website update is the addition of our secure shopping cart which allows event registration for attendees and sponsors. Currently we have both September and October programs in the cart so please make sure to check them out. Also the members directory was updated in late August.

On May 8 2013, the Chapter successfully hosted a technical meeting, consisting of a networking opportunity, dinner and presentation on Electric Field Vector Mapping (EFVM®) given by Matthew Durrett of International Leak Detection (ILD) and Secretary of the newly formed Kentucky Chapter of RCI, Inc. The meeting took place in the Pint Room of the PINT House in Orange, CA, a new venue for the Chapter.
The event drew a crowd of 26 and mainly included consultants, contractors and manufacturer’s representatives. While the attendees dined on home-made sirloin sliders, penne pasta and other American style pub treats and pints of micro-brews, Matthew introduced the history behind the leak detection technology, described the test procedure, reviewed compatible membranes/ systems and discussed case study examples. Near the end of the presentation Kris Houger of Western Waterproofing offered a few case study slides from a local, recently completed waterproofing replacement project in Los Angeles which utilized EFVM®.
The topic was engaging and both Matthew and Kris fielded many questions from the audience. All attendees earned 1.5 hours of continuing education hours from RCI and AIA.
We would like to thank Ron Johnston of the Union Roofing Contractors Association and Kris Houger and Clay Geilmann of Western Waterproofing for sponsoring the event.

The Chapter hosted our 11th annual golf tournament on April 18th, 2013, for the third consecutive year at Tustin Ranch Golf Course in Orange County. The facilities were once again exceptional and under sunny skies, and a gorgeous day the sold out tournament with 144 golfers in attendance was an overwhelming success.
In a best-ball tournament format the foursome’s tee’ed off at 1:00 sharp and by 6:00 the carts rolled into the clubhouse for a tri-tip, chicken and sausage smokehouse BBQ dinner with decadent chocolate brownies for desert. Danny Westerfield of D7 Consulting mc-ed the event and crowned this year’s tournament winners which included:
1st Place Overall: Hector Alarcon, Ron Johnston, Pat Hoffman and Andrew Larsen
2nd Place Overall: Joe Daniels, Jay Bligh, Kyle Eazor and Dan Fry
3rd Place Overall: John Patterson, Larry Burks, Todd Fritts and Kevin Biniasz
Closest to the Pin: Joe Daniels
Straightest Drive: Lloyd Whiteward
Longest Drive: Larry Burks
Following dinner we had an opportunity and bonus prize drawing that included several attractive prizes. Kevin Biniasz won this year’s bonus prize, an iPad Mini and iHome docking station.
The generous financial participation and support for this event allowed our Chapter to donate $1,000 to each the Union Roofing Contractors Association’s Don Banks Memorial Scholarship and to the Roofing Contractors Association’s Jim Nienow Scholarship. Remaining proceeds will used to support the Chapter, but primarily for funding continuing educational programs and networking opportunities for our members and industry.
We would like to thank all of our sponsors that contributed through financial support, and donations of golf balls, snacks, beverages, giveaways and tee signs which made this tournament one of the single largest fundraisers since the Chapters inception.
In particular we would like to thank our premier sponsors: D7 Consulting, Firestone Building Products, Georgia Pacific, Johns Manville, Letner Roofing, Lowry’s, Sika Sarnafil, Sunshine Supply Company, and Western Colloid for their generosity and support.
Also the tournament could not have been possible without our volunteers who selflessly sacrificed their work day in support of our Chapter. Specifically we would like to thank Missy DeLaTorre and Danielle Ward.

Szymon Zienkiewicz and Dean Larsen of the Chapter board attended the 28th RCI National Convention and Tradeshow in the Rosen Shingle Creek Resort in Orlando, Florida which commemorated the 30th anniversary of RCI. The annual event, which lasted from 14 March to 19 March attracted a record attendance of over 1,400, over half of the 2,700 registered members of RCI. Under the banner of "Celebrating the Past - Focusing on the Future" the event offered educational seminars, tradeshow exhibitions with live product demonstrations, committee meetings, a golf tournament and RCI examinations.
Carl Hiaasen, an award-winning, local author and reporter entertained during the keynote address with his satirical perspective on the daily events that transpire in south Florida. News headlines that he referenced definitely gave the "Headlines" segment on Jay Leno a run for its money. Mr. Hiaasen may be remembered here in Southern California for the feature film Striptease, starring Demi Moore and Burt Reynolds which was based on one of his novels.
During the convention our Chapter donated $2,000 to the RCI Foundation (RCIF) in support of their mission to foster research, advance education, and disseminate information on issues important to the building envelope industry.

RCI, Incorporated is an international association of professional consultants, architects, and engineers who specialize in the specification and design of roofing, waterproofing and building envelope systems.
Since 1983 RCI members have offered unbiased design, repair planning, quality observance, legal testimony, and general roof management services. In March of 2006, RCI (formerly Roof Consultants Institute) expanded its mission and service scope to include waterproofing and the building envelope. This action reflects the understanding that roofing issues often influence the entire building envelope. It was discovered that in increasing frequency, RCI Members are called upon to address building-wide concerns from below-grade to rooftop.
The Southern California (SoCal) Chapter formed in 2003 with the purpose to provide a medium at the local level for the advancement of the objectives of RCI - to promote closer relations and cooperation amount the professionals, contractors, manufacturers, trade associations and societies which are engaged in, or directly connected with, the building construction industry.
